Microbiology Department of U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, Ahmedabad provides accurate and effective diagnostic, surveillance and epidemiological services in clinical microbiology services required for a tertiary care on 24x7 basis, teaching cardiology super-Speciality hospital. Clinical microbiology laboratory provides dependable support and collaborates with infection prevention and control department. The microbiology laboratory possesses appropriate physical infrastructure, state of the art automated equipment and qualified, experienced and skilled staff. Microbiology laboratory strictly adheres its quality assurance programme and also participates in National Eternal Quality Assurance Programme managed by Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM), New Delhi.

Microbiology laboratory is equipped with automated blood and sterile body fluid culture system (BacTAlert 3D system of BioMerieux, France) and automated microbial identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) system (Vitek 2 Compact system of BioMerieux, France). Vitek 2 Compact system provides AST results in MIC values of antimicrobial agents using Advanced Expert System (AES) software which validates and interprets susceptibility results as per the current CLSI and/or EUCAST guidelines. The software of Vitek 2 compact system is updated every year with current interpretation guidelines of CLSI and/or EUCAST. The microbiology staff receives induction and periodic on-the-job training (OJT) for their professional knowledge update and skill enhancement. 

The quality policy of the Microbiology Department is to render the best possible and accurate services in a timely manner to contribute to better the patient outcomes and provide a valuable diagnostic support to treating doctors. Microbiology department also aims at providing significant contribution in research activities in the important research areas such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
